18 - Averett University is hosting a seminar on: Managing Your Equestrian Facility with Environmentally Sensitive Practices 6:00PM Thursday March 18, 2010 Averett University Student Center, Multi-Purpose Room Come early and have dinner in the new Dining Hall The Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District is presenting a seminar on the Chesapeake Bay Friendly-Horse Farm Project to help horse owners understand their role as stewards of the land and share environmentally sensitive and sensible horsekeeping practices. The goal of this seminar is to promote positive horse farm management strategies (aka dealing with MUD, MANURE, & PASTURES) that not only help horse property owner/managers create an attractive and healthier home for their horses and clients, but at the same time reduces erosion, protects the soil, and improves local water quality. A benefit to the horse is a benefit to the environment and a benefit to the Chesapeake Bay or your local watershed! The seminar’s focus will be on the Chesapeake Bay-Friendly Horse Farm Project, located in Gainesville, Virginia. This farm was given an extreme makeover to become an environmental model for all of Virginia and is the only one of its kind in the state. The privately owned farm was once a muddy mess, but with the help of the grant project we were able to turn this mucky farm into a model farm! At the seminar, we will provide background about our project, including before and after pictures, and discuss hot horse topics including mud and manure management, pasture management/rotational grazing, water troughs and fencing options, etc. You will learn what type of obstacles horse owners deal with and some solutions to these obstacles—musts for every current or future farm owner and manager. For more info contact Ginger Henderson 434-441-6448 vhenderson@averett.edu
