Equine Massage
Did you know that horses are one of the oldest mammals on earth . They are one of the fastest and can jump higher then many other mammals. They have finely tuned senses which allow them to escape even the smallest of threat and why they have survived for so many years. Horses can not show their pain or they will become prey. This is one reason it is so hard for humans to know when their horse is in pain and may need our help.
Did you know that horses benefit from a good massage just like people do? Equine massage is a non-invasive, therapeutic application of professional sports massage techniques. These techniques are applied to our equine athletes. When these techniques are applied by a well trained and certified therapist the benefits are numerous.
Horses can suffer from muscle soreness and fatigue just like their human counterparts. Equine sports massage can increase performance levels and allow your horse to perform at it's full potential. Other benefits are an increase in range of motion and flexibility, aide in toxin and waste removal from the muscles, and helps to prevents injuries, to name a few.
Most of us are quick to think a horse that has training problems is a result of a bad attitude or is uncooperative. When actually these horses may really be in pain. More than half a horse's body weight is composed of muscle. Performance horses are athletes and are usually engaged in a regular training program. As the muscular system develops, horses tend to lose flexibility and increase muscular tension. Tight muscles decrease performance and are injuries waiting to happen.
Muscular injuries can decrease circulation and oxygen to the muscles. This will increase the build up of waste products in the muscle. Muscular injuries can also cause skeletal problems from carrying the body in an abnormal way to avoid pain. Horses recovering from injury can also benefit from massage. Massage can help the muscles and joints return back to their previous state more easily and quickly.
With regular equine massage the benefits are numerous and is beneficial for horses of all disciplines. To summarize below is a list of
potential benefits
*Increase performance level *Increase of flexibility and range of motion *Helps prevent injury *Increase circulation which promotes healing *Relaxes muscle tension and spasms *Aids in toxin and waste removal from the muscles *Improves muscle tone * Reduces stress and calms the nervous system *Increases intestinal movement *Reduces inflammation of tissue in joints *Helps clean pores
There are different types of sports massage. Pre-event massage helps prepare the muscles to work longer and more effectively. Post-event massage assists the muscle in recovery to be ready for the next day of competition. Maintenance massage is scheduled around completion and is much longer in duration. The focus is head to tail working on the superficial, middle and deep muscle groups.
Equine Sports Massage is designed to promote wellness and assist with muscular problems. Equine Sports Massage is not a replacement for veterinary intervention and treatment. Speak to your horse's veterinarian if you are interested in massage. They can determine if it is appropriate for your horse.
